    Watershedding Base

    • 1). Wash the wall with soap and water. Wait for the wall to dry.

    • 2). Find the studs with a stud finder. Mark the ceiling and wall in line with the studs.

    • 3). Cover the wall with builders' felt, tar paper or house wrap. Measure the wall from ceiling to floor and add 2 inches. Cut a strip of felt and roll it up so it's easier to handle.

    • 4). Measure the width of the felt and the width of the wall. Divide the width of the wall by the felt to find out how many strips are necessary to cover the wall from side to side.

    • 5). Cut as many strips of felt as necessary.

    • 6). Staple or nail the felt flush with the the left corner and the edge of the ceiling where it meets the top of the wall. Unroll the material in a strip from the top of the wall to the base. Staple the sides of the felt to secure it.

    • 7). Use the utility knife to cut the bottom edge of the felt flush with the floor line. Secure the bottom edge with staples or nails.

    • 8). Install the rest of the felt to the side of the first overlapping the sides of each piece 2 to 3 inches. Cover the entire wall from left to right.

    • 9). Apply a second later of felt from left to right, staggering the seams.

    Lath

    • 1). Cut a sheet of lath large enough to fit the wall from ceiling to floor, the length of each felt strip.

    • 2). Find the top of the sheet. Run your hand over the lath vertically. From top to bottom, the sheet should feel textured.

    • 3). Fasten the top of the self-furring lath over the felt. Use 1-inch-long, 1-inch-wide staples, 1-inch concrete stub nails or 1-inch-long roofing nails. Space the fasteners 6 inches to 8 inches apart. The lath will rest about 1/4 inch away from the wall, forming a hollow space. Make additional rows of fasteners every 6 inches below the first.

    • 4). Apply 1.5-inch staples or nails fastener every 5 inches along the stud lines.

    Scratch Coat

    • 1). Scoop mortar onto the trowel. Smooth the mortar against the lath from bottom to top. Apply 1/2-inch of mortar with enough to fill the hollows plus 1/4-inch above the lath.

    • 2). Wait 15 to 20 minutes.

    • 3). Use the comb edge of the trowel to scratch the mortar forming trenches.

    • 4). Wait 12 to 18 hours for the mortar to begin to set.

    Bricks

    • 1). Apply a 1/2-inch layer of mortar to the back of a brick. Press the brick against the lath in the lower left corner of the wall. Hold the brick in place for 30 to 60 seconds.

    • 2). Place a spacer against the top and right side of the brick. Install a second brick to the right flush against the spacer.

    • 3). Repeat to apply the rest of the bricks. Stagger the bricks so that the vertical gaps between each brick are different in each row.

    • 4). Wait 12 to 18 hours.

    • 5). Apply sand mortar to the joints of the bricks to cover the exposed lath. Use a damp sponge to remove mortar from the veneer.
