How To Plan A Family Room

    • 1). Arrange seating based on your furniture, room size and family needs. A sectional sofa provides maximum seating in a family room. It can be placed in the middle of a room, leaving the walls free from furniture. A couch with a coffee table creates a more compact seating arrangement. The coffee table can be used for playing games.

    • 2). Position the television in the center of the room. Since the room is often used as a gathering place to watch television, if you have one it should be located where it can be viewed by all in the room.

    • 3). Create built-in storage. Whether your family room is large or small, you can maximize storage space with built-in bookcases or cabinets. Baskets and home decor boxes can be used to store small items like movies and toys.

    • 4). Create a space for games and activities that won't disturb the arrangement of the room. A game table in the corner of the room can provide a space for board games. A storage basket can hold video games in the area while not in use.

    • 5). Avoid light-colored carpet and furniture. Neutral colors and darker tones are more forgiving for the daily wear and tear of family use.
