Automotive Paint Troubleshooting

    Dry Spray

    • If dry paint is found lying on top of a previously painted area, look at how large the area you are painting is. This is usually caused when a fast-drying paint is applied over an area that has already dried. Try painting a smaller surface area. If using an aerosol can, hold the can closer to the surface. For paint dust that has dried on a painted area, sand it with fine-grit sandpaper (600 or finer), then polish. You may need to refinish if some paint gets taken off in the process.

    Bubbling

    • If you notice bubbling in the car paint after the spray has dried, sand down the surface and refinish with paint. Bubbling is caused by trapped cleaning solvents, dirt or moisture under the paint. Sand down to the metal, if necessary, and clean the metal surface again, making sure there is no dirt.

    Orange Peel

    • When the spray on a car dries to look like it is wrinkled orange peel, the paint is not drying properly on the cars surface. Check to make sure the temperature where you are painting is not too high. The ideal temperature is between 65 to 75 degrees F. If the temperature is correct, try spraying the paint closer to the car's surface. If the issue persists, check that the spray nozzle is free of clogs and debris. Sand any existing orange peel with 600 or finer sandpaper to rub out the paint. If any paint has been removed, refinish the surface.
