How to Flatten Your Stomach Before the Weekend

    • 1). Maximize your body's fat-burning capabilities by consuming nothing but the classic diet standbys: lean proteins like chicken, fish and fat-free cottage cheese; fiber-rich foods like bran cereal and fresh fruits; healthy carbs like whole grains; and low-calorie snacks like carrot and celery sticks. Eating sensible portions of healthy foods is the healthiest and the most effective way to pare fat quickly.

    • 2). Slash your intake of fats, sugar and salts. This means out with potato chips and fried foods and in with green, leafy vegetables and water-packed tuna fish.

    • 3). Over the next 5 days, dine from saucers instead of dinner plates to promote smaller servings. The smaller plate really does help you believe you're eating more than you are.

    • 4). Stay hydrated and help your body flush out waste by drinking plenty of water. Avoid soda, and don't even think about drinking beer, wine or liquor; alcohol's reputation as a toxic, bloating diet wrecker is well-deserved. You can lift a glass or two of bubbly at the reunion to celebrate your flatter stomach.

Bring out your stomach muscles and kick your metabolism into higher gear by doing cardio exercises, such as speed walking, jogging, dancing and cycling, all of which help reduce adipose tissue at your waistline. Don't overdo it, however--you don't want to limp your way through your big weekend.

    • 6). Drink green tea--unsweetened, naturally--to maximize the slimming effects of exercise. According to an article published in the February 2009 issue of "The Journal of Nutrition," a clinical trial showed that substances in green tea called catechins help the body burn more abdominal fat and promote exercise-induced weight loss.

    • 7). Slim and enhance your figure further by investing in good foundation undergarments made with tummy-slimming Lycra. If you're wearing stockings, choose the control-top variety. (Men should look for well-cut trousers that fit properly and don't sit too high on the waist, and avoid oversized belt buckles.)

    • 8). Choose a well-cut, dark-colored blouse or dress to minimize a protruding stomach. Detail at the neckline and shoulders will draw attention up from your midriff. And accentuate your assets above the waist: if you have pretty shoulders, sculpted arms or enviable cleavage, now is the time to show them off. (Men should go with shirts that are generously sized enough that there is no pulling at the buttons, paired with a dark, classically styled jacket. This might be a good occasion for you to have a custom fitting by a skilled tailor.)
