How to Install an Electric Starter Motor on a 1995 Evinrude Outboard Motor

    • 1). Remove the battery cables from your boat's battery, negative ("-") first, then positive "(+)", with an adjustable wrench.

    • 2). Apply a liquid thread locker to the threads of the two five-sixteenths-inch starter mounting bolts. Move the starter onto the power head, and tighten the mounting bolts to 15 to 17 foot-lbs. with a torque wrench.

    • 3). Thread the top mounting screw for the oil reservoir into place, and tighten to 6 to 9 foot-pounds. Move the the electrical bracket into place, and thread its retaining screw and ground stud into the bracket's mounting hole. Tighten the stud, and screw to 60 to 84 inch-pounds.

    • 4). Place the positive battery cable on the large post on the solenoid, and tighten the nut onto the post snugly. Connect the yellow/red neutral safety switch wire and the ground wire on the starter solenoid posts. Connect the red lead to the large solenoid terminal. Move the rubber boot over the solenoid's positive battery cable connection.

    • 5). Place the ground strap over the ground stud, thread the nut onto the terminal and tighten snugly. Spray vinyl electrical spray insulation on all wiring terminals except the battery cable covered by the protective boot. Reconnect the battery cables to the battery, positive cable first.
