- 1). Decide where you want the extra lighting. This will determine what types of lighting you will be using. Large, open areas of floor space are best suited for floor lamps. Under-cabinet lighting and touch lights are useful for lighting up counter tops.
- 2). Open up windows by replacing heavy drapes with blinds and sheer curtains. This will let light to shine through while still allowing for privacy if desired. Keeping the blinds open during the day will help to light a dark kitchen without adding to the electricity used in the home.
- 3). Place strands of Christmas lights on top of cabinets. The bulbs won't be noticeable from the floor and will create a soft glow that will help to light up the whole kitchen. This will mimic the look of expensive above-cabinet lighting without the expense or hassle of installation.
- 4). Install recessed and track lighting to brighten up hard-to-reach areas. Track lighting has the added bonus of allowing you to change the location and angle of the lights based on your current kitchen needs.
- 5). Check to make sure all power cords are pulled away from sinks, the stove, or any other potentially hazardous areas. Floor lamp cords should be tucked away behind the lamp to prevent tripping. Check cords often for fraying or other signs of damage. Due to the amount of water, heat, and other potential dangers present in the kitchen, you must be extra cautious about potential electrical hazards the extra lighting may present.
