Instructions to Make a Beaded Lanyard Badge Holder

    Materials

    • Lanyards often are made from Rexlace, a wide plastic cording that knots easily and holds up well. You can use Rexlace to make a beaded lanyard, but the beads will need large holes, like pony beads. If you'd prefer a more stylish design, make the beaded lanyard from soft monofilament line, which also knots and holds up well. Soft monofilament is thinner, so your beading choices are not limited to large-hole kids' beads.

A lanyard clip, scissors, jeweler's glue and an alligator clip are the only other materials necessary for this project, aside from the soft monofilament and a selection of 4mm to 6mm beads.

    Make the Lanyard

    • Cut a length of soft monofilament line twice as long as the desired length of the lanyard. Measure the lanyard clip and include its length in the overall length of the piece. Add 6 inches to make tying a knot in the line easier.

Thread the lanyard clip, which will hold the badge, on the monofilament line and slide it to the center of the line. Hold both ends of the line together and thread six to eight beads over both strands, all the way to the badge holder. The length of the single beaded strand is up to you, so add more or fewer beads as you like.

When the single beaded strand is complete, separate the two strands of monofilament line. Thread beads over each one separately, all the way to the top of the single beaded strand. Work on one side at a time, and then use the alligator clip to hold the beads in place while you thread beads on the other side. Bead both sides as you like, and stop beading within 3 inches from the end of the monofilament. Remove the alligator clip and tie the ends together in a double overhand knot. You can feed the excess line down inside the beads, or cut it.

A drop of jeweler's glue covering the knot in the monofilament line will help it remain intact. Clip the badge onto the lanyard clip holder to complete the project.
