How to Connect a MIDI Keyboard
- 1). Locate the output port on the back of your MIDI keyboard. Newer models use USB ports, but older models may have a MIDI Out port, a circular port with five pins. Whichever port your keyboard has, there will be a corresponding connector cable included with your keyboard.
- 2). Plug the connector cable to the output port on the back of your MIDI keyboard. Check the other end of the connector cable. It may be a USB plug or another MIDI plug, and you'll need to find a corresponding port on your computer. If your computer doesn't have a MIDI In port, you will have to buy a MIDI-to-USB adapter. You may also be able to connect directly to your sound card; this will be a 15-pin port on the back of your computer, but this type of connector appears only on older computers.
- 3). Install the drivers for your MIDI keyboard once you have connected it to your computer. Use the included installation disk to do this; just load the disk into your computer's optical drive. The installation program may run automatically. If it doesn't, then go to My Computer and double-click the optical drive's icon. Follow any prompts given by the installation program and the program will take care of the rest. Check the Web site of the keyboard manufacturer for driver updates, especially if the keyboard is a couple of years old.
