How to Inspect the Exhaust System on a Toyota Tacoma
- 1). Raise the hood and locate the three tubular pipes on both exhaust manifolds, located on each side of the engine. Check that the bolts are secure and the gaskets aren't worn. Look for moisture buildup or cracks on the manifold.
- 2). Lie on a creeper, slide under the car and check the rest of the exhaust system.
- 3). Shine a flashlight under the truck to inspect the gaskets and the bolts on the undersides of both manifolds, which meet at a single head pipe.
- 4). Study the other parts of the exhaust, including the catalytic converter, muffler and the two tailpipes that emerge from the muffler. Tighten any connections that may be loose. Run your hand over the entire system to feel for holes, cracks, rust or loose connections. Tap gently with a hammer along each piece to locate weak sections.
- 5). Feel the hangers and clamps to make sure they're securely in place. Rattling may indicate that they're loose.
- 6). Slide out from under the truck when you finish your examination.
