How to Make Moccasins at Home

    • 1). Put on a pair of socks, place your right foot on a piece of 8 1/2-by-11 inch white paper and trace its outline. Measure 1/2 inch from the outline and draw a line that follows the shape of only your toes. Use a ruler to ensure the lines are spaced 1/2 inch apart at all points. Draw a vertical line that extends from the left endpoint of the outer curved toe outline to the bottom of the page. Repeat for the other side. The lines should be parallel to each other and perpendicular to the bottom of the page.

    • 2). Measure between the parallel lines and mark the midpoint. Draw a third parallel line that passes through this central point. Draw a horizontal line that measures 1 inch from the bottom of your heel at all points. Measure the length of your foot from your ankle bone to your big toe. Measure this distance from the top of your foot outline and make a horizontal line that measures 1 inch to either side of your center vertical line.

    • 3). Tape another piece of 8 1/2-by-11 inch paper to the left of your drawing. Fold the paper along the leftmost vertical line of the pattern so your drawing is on top of the new sheet. Cut both pages along the rightmost vertical line and along the toe outline. Trim the page along the horizontal line at the bottom of your heel. Do not cut along the fold line.

    • 4). Open the pattern and cut a T-shaped slit along the center line and the horizontal ankle line on the right side only. Trace the pattern on a piece of leather, including lines marking the opening you just cut. Cut out the pattern and cut the right side open in the same fashion as the pattern. Vertically fold the two halves of the leather inside out, with the rightmost side on top.

    • 5). Thread a sharp needle designed for leather work with waxed thread or artificial sinew. Use clamps to secure the two halves of the leather together. Sew the two pieces together using a whip stitch, accomplished by pulling the needle through both pieces of fabric, then looping the thread along the outside of the leather and pulling the needle through again on the same side that you started with. Press the moccasin flat and stitch up the heel using the same method.
