How to Remove Varnish From a Fiberglass Door
- 1). Place canvas drop cloths over a porch or driveway. Set two sawhorses on the drop cloths.
- 2). Remove the door from its hinges and lay it flat across the sawhorses. Unscrew the locks and doorknob and set each aside.
- 3). Lightly sand the varnished door with 120-grit sandpaper. Don't overdo it; the goal here is to slightly roughen the varnish finish.
- 4). Put on rubber gloves. Pour 1/4 gallon of paint stripping solvent into a plastic 1-gallon painter's pot.
- 5). Apply stripping solvent to the fiberglass door with a natural-bristle China brush.
- 6). Wipe the loosened varnish with a nylon pad. Repeatedly dip the pad into the solvent to rinse the gummy varnish from it.
- 7). Dampen a rag with fresh, clean solvent and wipe any remaining varnish residue from the door.
