How to Focus a Camera on One Thing & Blur Out the Background
- 1). Turn on your digital camera and use the mode dial to switch to Aperture Priority mode. On most models, this is represented as "AV" or "A" on the mode dial.
- 2). Lower the aperture setting by using your camera's screen interface or the main dial above the camera's shutter button. The aperture setting is represented by the letter "f" followed by a number. You should lower your aperture setting to at least f/8.
- 3). Position the object or person you are photographing no more than 10 feet away from the camera.
- 4). Hold down the shutter button slightly to allow the camera to focus on the object or person. Most models will display a square around the focus area.
- 5). Press down on the shutter button all the way to take the photograph. When the image is processed, the object or person will be in focus and the background will be blurred.
