    Scroll Wheel

    • Whereas the 6th generation nano has done away with Apple's famous scroll wheel in favor of a tiny touch screen, the 5th generation nano still features the multi-control dial. You select songs and navigate through menus using the wheel, spinning clockwise to go down in a menu and counter-clockwise to move up. The center button is the selector and controls a lot of the iPod's other features.

    Camera

    • The 5th generation iPod nano has a tiny video camera built-in with a handful of digital effects. The camera captures compressed video at 640 by 480 pixels at 30 frames per second. Apple included 15 special effects, which are applied in real-time to your videos. These effects include sepia and black and white filters, an X-ray effect, a classic film grain overlay, thermal imaging (again, like the X-ray, simulated), security camera-style footage and a kaleidoscopic manipulation.

    Capacity

    • Two different iPod nano 5th generation models were available: an 8 GB model and a 16 GB model. According to Apple, the 16 GB model stores up to 16 hours of video or 4,000 songs, or any combination of the two. This depends on the length of the songs and the compression of the videos, of course. Divide these figures approximately in half for 8 GB estimates. The trouble with all iPod-listed capacities is that a portion of the internal memory is taken up by the software that powers the device, so you never have full access to 100 percent of the 8 GB or 16 GB.

    FM Radio

    • The 5th generation nano included a built-in FM tuner with a "live pause" feature. Radio broadcasts are recorded temporarily on your device, allowing you to pause and not miss a beat.

    Battery and Charge

    • The 5th generation iPod nano charges like its predecessors and successors, by connecting to your PC with a provided USB cable. From empty, it takes about three hours to fully charge. The battery lasts for up to 24 straight hours of music playback and about five hours of video playback.

    Colors

    • There were seven color options for the 5th generation iPod nano. Users could choose from black, blue, green, orange, pink, purple and silver design. Apple has since released a refurbished yellow nano, which is available through the Apple store.
