How to Use Bedsheets for Window Treatments
- 1). Install the curtain rod in the selected place. Measure the window and the sheets being used. Determine if the top of the sheet will be at the top of the window or at the bottom; some sheets have detailing that can be displayed in either place.
- 2). Test the width and length of the sheet by looping the sheet over the curtain rod. As a rule of thumb, the sheet's width should be 2 to 2 1/2 times wider than the window's width to allow for pleating. Length can be adjusted by hemming the curtain, so mark the point where the hem will be placed.
- 3). Take down the sheet and lay flat. If the sheet requires cutting, mark the middle of the sheet at both top and bottom and along the horizontal edge of the bottom if hemming is necessary. Hold the fabric taut while cutting along the line.
- 4). On the portion of the sheet that will be used by the curtain rod, find the hem that was created by the manufacturer. Using a seam ripper or scissors, cut the vertical seams on the edges of the horizontal seams to create a pocket in which to slip in the curtain rod.
- 5). If the sheet requires hemming, measure a 1-inch hem on all raw edges. Using fabric glue or a sewing machine, hem the curtain on all necessary edges, being careful not close the curtain rod pocket.
- 6). Iron your new curtains and slip them over the curtain rod, using the pocket created at the top of the window treatment. Install the curtain rod. If desired, tie back the curtain with a strip of scrap fabric or a matching ribbon.
