How to Draw a Baby Lamb

104 11
    • 1). Gather reference images of lambs, from books or the images. Look at photographs rather than the drawings of others' to avoid copying any unintentional mistakes. If possible, go to a farm or field with baby lambs to draw from life.

    • 2). Gather your materials, such as paper, pencils, pens and erasers. Have your reference images at hand, unless you are drawing from life. Set everything out so it is at hand to avoid getting up while you draw. Put on music in the background if you'd like.

Begin sketching the somewhat wedge-shaped head of the lamb, keeping in mind that even baby sheep have pronounced brow ridges. The fur on the head is short and densely-packed. On the ears, which jut out sideways from just above and behind the brow, the wool is somewhat fluffier. The nose is a dark, shallow V-shape which leads in the center to a small mouth. Sketch lightly, keeping your lines easily erasable.

    • 4). Draw the neck and body. Lambs have short necks, and nearly rectangular bodies with slightly round bellies. The coat of wool is short and made up of densely-packed curls that lend to the lamb's soft, fuzzy texture and appearance. Depending on the breed of sheep, lambs' tails vary in length and width, so check your reference to determine how best to draw the tail.

Add in the four legs, which are long in proportion to the body and end in cloven hooves. The fur on the legs is shorter and less dense than on the body, with less of a pronounced curl.

    • 6). Erase any mistakes and redraw the problem areas.

    • 7). Ink your lines carefully with a pen, tracing over your sketched out pencil image. Erase the pencil marks.

    • 8). Add any additional details, such as shading or crosshatching. You may shade with pen or pencil, or even add color.
