    Collect Ties

    • Collect neckties in colors that you want to use for your quilt. Collect ties from family members, acquaintances, thrift shops and garage sales. Ties are typically made from polyester, silk, nylon or blends from these fabrics. Check that the condition of the fabric is good and the color hasn’t faded.

    Check Templates

    • Check out templates for sun ray quilts at your local fabric store, quilt shop or craft store.

    Remove Stitches

    • Use a seam ripper to gently remove the stitches of the tie. Cut labels off the back side with a pair of scissors. Remove interface fabric and the lining.

    Iron Fabric

    • Lay the tie fabric on your ironing board so that the right side is facing down. Place a pressing cloth over the tie fabric. Use a low setting when ironing so as not to damage the fabric. Iron out as much of the folds in the fabric as possible.

    Determine Color Scheme

    • Determine the color scheme for your quilt. You will need to use more than one tie to make a block of color. A square color block might take up to three ties. Depending on the look you want, use ties in contrasting shades or use some from the same color family.

    Cut Pieces

    • Use a rotary cutter or scissors to cut the necktie to match the shapes of the sun ray pattern. You will need enough fabric to make a square and eight right triangles. A right triangle consists of a triangle that has one 90 degree angle and two other angles that are less than 90 degrees. The size and color of these geometric shapes are up to you.

    Follow Pattern

    • Follow the sun ray quilt pattern to properly arrange the pieces.

    Assemble Blocks

    • Use a sewing machine and all-purpose thread to sew the pieces in this placement so you have several sun ray quilt blocks.

    Sew Pieces

    • Sew the finished blocks together to make the top of the quilt.

    Assemble Quilt

    • Iron the raw edges of the quilt using a low setting. Place the quilt so the raw sides are facing up. Layer quilt batting over the quilt top. Layer a quilt backing fabric over both of these layers. Pin the fabric in place. Sew through all three quilt layers using all-purpose thread and your sewing machine.
