How to Install a Shower Rod in Sheetrock
- 1). Place the shower rod where you plan to install it. Use a pencil to outline the wall around the end of the shower rod. Consider the length of the curtain when you choose a location. It should extend down past the top edge of the bathtub 6 to 8 inches.
- 2). Drill a pilot hole in the center of the pencil outline. Use a drill-bit size that matches the recommendations supplied by the hollow-wall anchor manufacturer. If you notice while drilling that you have penetrated a wall stud, do not use hollow-wall anchors at that location. They are unnecessary.
- 3). Tap the hollow-anchor into the pilot hole using a hammer or rubber mallet. Use light taps to slowly work the anchor into place. The tighter the fit, the more holding strength the anchor will have.
- 4). Align the screw holes on the shower rod with the installed hollow-wall anchors.
- 5). Turn in the installation screws that came with your shower rod using a screwdriver or screw gun. As the screw rotates, it will cause the anchor to expand in the wall. Stop screwing when the anchor expands completely. This may be difficult to detect, so check the instructions that came with your anchors for tips. Typically, when the installation screw becomes difficult to turn, you should stop.
- 6). Hang the curtain on the rod after all installation screws are in place. Tug lightly on the curtain to verify that the installation is secure.
