How to Draw Cartoon Jackets
- 1). Start by drawing the collar. Draw two irregularly-shaped triangles, going from slightly below your character's ear (if you are drawing the jacket on a character) downwards. Starting underneath these triangles, draw two horizontal lines sloping slightly downwards to represent the shoulders of the jackets. Draw short vertical lines from the other edges of the triangles to shape the rest of the jacket.
- 2). Add in the sides and seams of the jacket. Extend the short vertical lines further down. Depending on how large you want the collar to be, these lines could be anywhere from two to four times the length of the triangles. To add seams, draw a horizontal line about one-fifth of the way from the bottom of the jacket to represent the hem, as well as side seams extending vertically down the sides of the coat, if you wish them to be visible on your cartoon jacket.
- 3). Draw wrinkles in your jackets. Wrinkles will make your jacket look lifelike. You can accomplish these by sketching in different straight and curved lines. At this point, if you wish to add pockets, you can do so by using rectangles.
- 4). Add your zipper or buttons. If you wish your coat to have a zipper, use three straight lines (two parallel, vertical lines cutting between the two triangles of the collar and one across the bottom). Then, draw in short horizontal lines connecting these vertical lines to show the teeth of the zipper. If you prefer buttons, do not draw in teeth but rather place buttons on one side of the coat, equidistant from one another.
- 5). Shade your jacket. Using thin black lines in a crosshatching manner (going in two different directions), add shadows in places where they would normally appear on a jacket: under the collar, on the underside of the arm or on one side of the body.
