How to Paint Faux Bronze

    • 1). Prepare the item for painting by cleaning it with denatured alcohol. This will remove manufacturer residues as well as skin oils and any other dirt, or grime that might be on your project item.

    • 2). Prime your project item by painting it with B-I-N using the foam roller. This may cause the surface to be rough, but don't worry about that. It is the desired effect. Allow this coat to dry for at least 45 minutes.

    • 3). Wet your rags and ring them dry so they are damp. Then fold them into 4 by 4-inch squares. Dip your rag into the brown paint, blotting off the excess and pat the paint all over the surface of your project item. Acrylic paint dries quickly, so you don't have to wait for it to dry. Next, repeat the same process with the bronze paint. Continue rag painting your item alternating first brown, then bronze paint. This gives the paint good coverage and depth of color. Be sure to finish the project with bronze paint.

    • 4). Put green paint on a paper plate and use a small piece of rag that has been wet and rung dry. Use the edge of the rag to apply green paint along the edges of the item. Use very tiny amounts to give a hint of green color. To get an idea of how much green to look at, view items or photographs of items with a verdigris effect. You can remove mistakes with a damp rag if you catch it before it dries. If you do get too much green on the item, you can go back over it with a bit of bronze. Allow your painted item to sit overnight.

    • 5). Shellac your finished product using the small paint brush. (The shellac should be mixed 50-50 with denatured alcohol.) Allow it to dry and apply a second coating. If you feel your item is too shiny after it had completely dried, you can use fine steel wool to rub it down to remove some of that glossy shine.
