How to Remodel and Design a Room

    • 1). Determine your remodeling budget for the room. This helps determine the scope of the project and the materials that fall in your price range.

    • 2). Identify the purpose for the room. Go beyond simply identifying the type of room such as a bedroom or a family room. List the ways you want to use the room. For example, if you're remodeling a spare bedroom you might also want it to serve as a home office and storage area for off season clothing. Keep the purpose of the remodeled room in mind as you create the design.

    • 3). Think about the decorating style you want to use in the room's design. The style of the rest of your home is one consideration. Personal preference is another. Decide if the room will have a specific theme or simply follow a general style such as modern, rustic or formal.

    • 4). Write a list of components you want to include in the room based on the purposes you listed. Include furniture, fixtures, lighting and other design elements you want.

    • 5). Measure the room including any built-ins or other permanent structures in the room. Draw a floor plan of the room using those measurements. Mark the windows, doors, heat registers and electrical outlets on the drawing.

    • 6). Sketch in the main furniture and fixtures in the room. Note the sizes of these pieces so you get a sense of how they will best fit in the room.

    • 7). Assess the current lighting in the room. Decide if you need a new overhead fixture either for better functionality or to match the new design of the room. Determine if you need to add task lighting in the different functional areas of the room.

    • 8). Choose a flooring option for the room. Hardwood, carpet, vinyl and tiles are the main options for homes. The exact flooring type and style depends on the room's overall decorating style, use and your budget.

    • 9). Choose the color palette for the walls and furnishings in the room. Decide what finishing touches you want to add to the remodeled room.
