Building a new home is a much anticipated and exciting event. However owning a home comes with certain responsibilities and the onus is on you as the home owner to maintain the house. This is especially evident in winter time. So if you are building a new home read on to find some handy hints for preparing your home for the winter.

1.Make sure that you clear gutters and downpipes of leaves and debris before winter to stop overflowing and potential flooding and check for blockages.

2.Prune any overhanging trees and shrubs away from the roof to help reduce the amount of debris that falls into gutters, this will help you keep on top of the clearing etc

3.When a storm is forecast tidy your garden of loose objects and secure outdoor furniture.

4.Check to see if there are any loose, missing or cracked tiles on your roof to ensure leaking does not occur during the wet weather.

5.Check the drainage area and kerb near your driveway is clear of debris to assist quick drainage if there is a heavy downpour.

6.Check that you have adequate insurance cover for your home building and contents- this includes the amount of cover is sufficient and also what your policy covers (eg flood, torm damage etc)

7.Don't put fan heaters in areas with restricted airflow. They may overheat and cause a fire.

8.Don't use portable heaters in the bathroom. Install a specifically designed bathroom heater.

9.Place your heater at least one metre from flammable items such as curtains, furniture, toys and bedding.

If you are building a new home or have just finished building a new home then these handy hints will be sure to keep your home dry but more importantly safe during winter.
