How to Install Round Corner Bead for Drywall
- 1). Glue the end-cap to the drywall. Spray glue onto the back of the end-cap, then onto the bottom six inches of each side of the corner where the corner bead will be applied. The end-cap should be glued to the wall approximately a half an inche from the floor. This space is to ensure that if the home shifts, that there will be no pressure on the bead, making it less likely to crack.
- 2). Cut the corner bead to fit from wall to end-cap. Set the corner bead into the corner, tight against the ceiling. The bead should overlap the end-cap. Use the snips to score the paper on the corner bead where the bead and the seat of the end cap meet. Now that the measurement has been made, cut the bead where is was scored, using the snips. Double check the measurement by putting the cut corner bead in place. If the corner bead is too long to sit comfortably on the seat of the end-cap then shave a little off the bead using the snips. The bead can be up to 1/16th of an inche short and still be okay. If the cut is more than 1/16th off the bead will not be usable.
- 3). Apply mud the wall. The all-purpose mud should be applied to each side of the corner using the 6" knife. Place the corner bead into the corner with the bead sitting tight to the seat of the end-cap. Using the 6" knife, wipe out the mud from the paper of the corner bead. When complete, the paper should be smooth and firmly stuck to the wall. If there is an area that does not have enough mud to make the paper stick to the wall then use the 6" knife to pull away a small amount of paper in that area and add more mud underneath. The paper will then need to be smoothed once again using the 6" knife.
- 4). Fill the end-cap with mud. The end-cap has some lines cut into the square portion of the cap. Using the 6" knife, fill the inside of the cap with mud by stuffing it into the cuts. Once complete, smooth any remaining mud with the 6" knife. The bead will need to dry which typically takes 24 hours but can take longer in very humid climates.
- 1). Apply mud to the dry corner bead. Using the 6" knife, scrape away any ridges on the end-cap so that it is smooth. Apply the all purpose mud to the bead and end-cap using the 10" trowel. Once one side is covered, use the trowel to smooth out the mud. The end-cap should be completely covered and the mud should also be tight against the ceiling. The same process will need to be applied to the second side. Once both sides have been covered the mud will need to dry. This process will take another 24 hours.
- 2). Sand and reapply mud. Put on the mask and sand out any ridge in the dry mud. Using the 10" trowel apply a second coat of mud to the bead and end-cap. Allow the mud to dry a second time.
- 3). Sand the bead. Once the bead dried, don the mask and sand all the ridge from the bead. Also sand the square edge of the end-cap and the round portion of the bead. Once sanding is complete, the bead is ready for paint.
