Respect her opinion and experience.
She has been down this road before and although it seems like she is outdated in some of her views, don't just shoot them down.

In a frank and respectful ways let her know what are your expectations and find out what are hers so that there is less miscommunication.

Let your modern husband fight the big battles.
Some battles are not meant to be fought by you.
If you really feel that it is a major issue and it will affect your relationship with your husband, then let him deal with his mother and you just step back.

Let the small things slide.
Yes you are different and you have different ways of doing things, but sometimes as a modern wife, we need to let the small things slide.

Call in every once in a while to see how she is going.
It's nice and makes them feel like you care about them outside of the boundaries of being their son's wife.

Apologize if you do something wrong or were out of place.

Let her control how you run your house, manage your affairs or raise your children.
Stand your ground and be firm without being rude.

Shout, curse or lash out even when you get really angry.
Just walk away.

Get drawn into the family confusion.
You meet them in the bacchanal, so leave them in the confusion.
Listen but don't comment.
Know your boundaries and respecting each other is the best way to maintain positive relationship not only with a mother in law but also your husband.
