How to Make Over a Room for Girls
- 1). Look at how your daughter wants to use the room. Common activities in a room besides sleeping are socializing with friends, studying, working on a hobby and dressing. The makeover for the bedroom should attempt to address all of these room uses.
- 2). Select a decorating style or theme. This will help you determine possible color schemes and furniture choices.
- 3). Incorporate the old stuff whenever possible. Take an assessment of the items your daughter has in her room to see which items will make the transition to the new room; trying to change everything all at once can get expensive.
- 4). Decide which wall will be the accent or focal wall and paint that wall a darker color than the surrounding walls. This gives the eye a starting point from which to take in the decorative theme. Usually, the bed's headboard goes against this wall. To dress it up even further, hang a gallery of posters from your daughter's favorite movie or music stars.
- 5). Paint the accent areas and furniture pieces you're going to include in the room's color scheme. For example, paint the inside of a window seat the same color as the focal wall, trim the door jambs and paint items like the chair and desk set if the piece calls for it.
- 6). Create a space for your daughter to study. Provide extra shelf or file cabinet space for her to store her homework and set up a lamp.
- 7). Choose decorative accessories that capture the decorating motif. For example, if your daughter has chosen an old Hollywood decorating theme, you might bring in some director's chairs for her to create a visitors' nook, add a row of lights around her vanity mirror and hang up black and white stills of old-time movie stars. The point of the accessories is to support the visual themes she's chosen for the room. The planning stage of this makeover will help you and her address some of these choices.
- 8). Set up a place for her display special items. Although she may be growing up, many young girls like to save keepsakes from their childhoods, like a favorite stuffed animal or doll or souvenirs from a favorite trip. Provide her with shelves or a hope chest where she can keep these items; the bonus is that these items can become a part of the decor.
