How to Use Texture in Decor

  • 1). Give the room a casual or even rustic feel with a heavy texture on walls. This can be achieved by means of a coarse plaster-type treatment using drywall joint compound, or a textured or faux-texture wallpaper or paint treatment.

  • 2). Serve up a cold ambience (often desirable in minimalist and modern environments) with sheeny, low- and no-texture surfaces and walls.

  • 3). Impart coziness with textured throws (chenille or fleece, for example), rugs (such as shag and Berber types) and upholstery (think chenille, velvet and corduroy). Fringe-trimmed pillows and window treatments also lend coziness.

  • 4). Mix up the texture - hard and flat with soft and nubby/plush - to add drama to decor.

  • 5). Lend a sensual, romantic air with satin and silky textiles and lacquered wood.

  • 6). Impart dimension in a monochromatic color scheme with texture. Otherwise, the room seems flat, with all the furnishings fading together into a big blob.

  • 7). Use fabric textures to harmonize with the desired style or theme in your room. Denim may say country or Southwestern; corduroy is probably casual, possibly masculine; silk brocade says formal and possibly feminine; tapestry says antique/Old World.
