Ceramic Checkerboard

• Create a checkerboard design pattern with ceramic tile on your bar or countertop in your kitchen. You can alternate 2-inch or 4-inch tiles in two colors that contrast or complement each other for a distinctive design alternative. To lay ceramic tile countertops, apply thinset mortar over a 3/4-inch plywood substrate and press the tiles into place. You can use tile spacers around the perimeter of each tile so that your grout lines are all the same. Grout the tiles when the thinset is completely dry; remember to remove all of the grout residue from the ceramic while it's still wet or your tiles may appear cloudy. One of the most important steps in maintaining a ceramic tile countertop is to seal the grout often to protect against stains and moisture.
  
  

Granite Tile

• Consider granite tile countertops in your kitchen for the same strength, durability, heat-resistance and natural beauty found in a solid stone slab. Granite tiles are 12 inches square and average one-third the price of granite slab countertops. You can install them yourself the same way you install ceramic tile. The only obstacle with granite tile is cutting the "nosing" or front lip of your countertops. You can get around this complication with a homemade jig that allows you to cut perfect 45-degree miters.
  
  

Slate Countertop

• Slate tiles are characteristically rough with color variations that contribute to the intrinsic beauty of the stone. When purchasing slate tiles, do not skimp on quality as lesser quality slate has a tendency to flake, leaving you with bits of stone lying around your kitchen. You can install slate tiles the same way that you install ceramic or granite tiles, but you should pay careful attention to sealing the slate and the grout. Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for the type of sealer that you choose and for how often you should seal the tiles. Slate tiles may require a bit more maintenance than ceramic or granite, but the natural beauty of the stone makes up for the extra work.
