If you have decided to buy a portable air conditioner to beat the heat this summer, it is important to keep in mind a few useful maintenance tips to ensure a trouble free operation.

• Venting: It is important that air conditioners have proper vents through either a window or a wall to ensure free outlet for the warm air to the outside. Manufacturer's instructions on venting standards have to be strictly followed as these parameters might vary from unit to unit. Typically you will get a venting kit along the air conditioner unit or the option to purchase it along with the portable air conditioner package.

• Proper Electrical Power: The electric power available should be sufficient to run the room air conditioner without blowing off the fuse. You should have a power switch that will support the power consumption of the air conditioner. Never use extension cords for your portable air conditioner, because it could lead to a fire hazard as the cord could become overloaded

• Water Removal Trays: Portable air conditioner will have different methods to collect the water that gets collected from the cooling process. Some models of portable air conditioners will have water removal trays where as in others a continuous drainage hose will be used to drain out the water collected. In case the unit lacks a water removal tray, make sure to empty it as per the guidelines of the manufacturer. Make sure that the removal tray is easily accessible because if the water is not drained off promptly, the unit might get switched off or it could spill over.

• Filters: Portable air conditioners have two types of filters; a carbon air conditioner filter that removes odors and an air filter that filters dust particles. These filters need to be washed regularly and replaced at the right time to ensure the best performance. Different units will have different types of filters and to know how often these have to be replaced, you can refer the product manual and the guidelines of the manufacturer.

• Exhaust Hose: The exhaust hose has to be kept straight while the venting system is in use. Do not add up to its length and make sure that it is kept in such a way that it does not hinder your free movement.

Just tag along these tips to ensure a trouble free operation of your portable air conditioner and enjoy the summer!
