How to Make Printed Curtains

    • 1). Measure the window. Using a tape measure, mark from the top of the window where the rod will be hung down to where you want the curtains to end. Make a note of this measurement. Measure the width of the window and write that down as well. The width measurement should be doubled for your fabric to ensure that the curtains hang properly.

    • 2). Select and cut the fabric. If you are purchasing fabric in a store, bring your measurements with you and have the staff cut the fabric into panels for you, instead of buying one long sheet of fabric. Select the printed pattern that appeals to you. If you are recycling bedsheets, select flat sheets that are free of any stains or worn spots.

    • 3). Launder the material. Many fabrics will shrink. To get a true measurement, the fabric must be freshly cleaned and dried. If you are using dry-clean-only material, skip this step.

    • 4). Iron the hem line for the panels. Using an iron, fold the edge of the fabric to make the hem and press it. Remember this should be on the inside of the fabric pattern, not the outside. Work slowly to keep a straight line. Repeat on all four edges.

    • 5). Stitch all four hems. Using your sewing machine, select the straight stitch and hem all four sides of the curtain panel. Again, work slowly and evenly. For the bottom hem, once the fabric is initially hemmed, fold it over a half inch again and stitch this to create the bottom hem. For the top hem, fold the fabric over at least 2 inches and stitch the edges. This will create the pocket for the rod.

    • 6). Repeat for the remaining panel. Repeat Steps 4 and 5 for the second panel. Since this is printed material, hang the fabric next to your finished panel to ensure the pattern will line up properly. Pin the fabric where the top hem needs to be after matching up everything.
