How to Paint a Wood Entry Door

104 6

    Simple Door

    • 1). Hold the door in place and unscrew the hinges from the door frame. Take the door down from the frame and remove the hinges from the door.

    • 2). Lay a tarp or plastic sheeting over the surface on which you want to paint the door. Place the door in the center of the tarp or plastic sheeting, making sure that you have plenty of coverage on either side.

    • 3). Apply paint primer to the door's surface and allow the primer to dry. Sand the primer with fine-grit sandpaper to smooth the primer down and use a dry paintbrush to dust the sanding dust from the door.

    • 4). Apply paint to a mostly flat door with a paint roller or a paintbrush. A paint roller speeds up the paint job, while a paintbrush gives you more control over the paint job. If you do spread the paint with a roller, go over the entire surface with long strokes of a paintbrush to smooth the paint.

    • 5). Use a small paintbrush to smooth paint in any decorative areas of the door, like simple carvings in the doors center. Make sure that paint is not left sitting in the carved areas, where it can dry and ruin the design. Allow the door to dry.

    • 6). Flip the door over once the paint dries and paint the opposite side in the same manner as the first. Use a small paintbrush to paint the edges of the door, applying a thin coat and allow the paint to dry. Let the paint fully dry.

    • 7). Add one to two more coats of paint to the door, one side at a time, allowing the paint to dry fully between each coat. Once dry, return the hinges and hardware to the door and the door to the door frame.

    Ornate Door

    • 1). Take the door down from the door frame, remove the hinges and place the door on a covered surface. Tape off any panes of glass. Prime the first side of the door with a paintbrush and use a small, narrow paintbrush to spread the primer evenly over intricately-carved areas of the door. Sand the flat areas of the door once the primer dries.

    • 2). Spread paint over the door with a large paintbrush. Before the paint dries, use a small paintbrush to spread or remove paint that pools in small, carved areas of the door. As the paint dries, check the carved areas of the door to make sure that no paint is running into the carved areas.

    • 3). Turn the door over and repeat the painting process on the opposite side of the door. Paint the edges of the door with a small paintbrush.

    • 4). Use as many coats of paint as it takes to get the color that you want for the entry door. Once the door dries fully return the door to the door frame, remove any tape and replace hardware.
