How to Wire an Auto Stereo
- 1). Remove your stereo from the dashboard. The method to do this varies between different makes and models of vehicles. You may need to remove part of the dashboard or use special tools to do this properly. Consult your owner's manual or an expert if you are unsure of how to proceed.
- 2). Disconnect the grounding wire from the stereo. This is usually a black wire that is attached to the chassis of the car with a screw or bolt.
- 3). Unwire the old stereo by cutting the connecting wires with your wire cutters. Do not cut the black grounding wire.
- 4). Compare the wires on the new stereo's harness to the ones in your vehicle. You will be matching the wires together by color. Wrap any extra wires in electrical tape to make sure they won't short the stereo when it is in use.
- 5). Splice the remaining wires together being sure to match the colors. Use a wire stripper to remove 1 inch of protective coating from each wire.
- 6). Wrap the corresponding wires around each other and seal the exposed wire with electrical tape. Repeat on each wire.
- 7). Wrap the grounding wire around the bolt or screw and install the stereo into the car.
- 8). Test the stereo by turning it on. It should play clearly. If one of the speakers doesn't seem to be clear you can check the wiring color chart, remove the stereo and resplice the wire.
