How to Install a 1956 Chevy Sway Bar
- 1). Hold the sway bar in front of you so that the width of the bar is in front and the dip in the middle of the bar goes down toward the ground. Install a sway bar bushing over the sway bar so there is one bushing on each side of the sway bar, outside of the center dip.
- 2). Assemble the sway bar end links onto the sway bar in the following order, working from the top of the bolt down: Bolt, washer, bushing, sway bar, bushing, washer, spacer, washer, bushing, angle bracket, bushing, washer and nut. If necessary, refer to the illustration in the kit for placement.
- 3). Hold the sway bar up against the bottom of the frame with jack stands and a jack. Measure the sway bar with a tape measure to ensure that the bar is centered on the frame and the vehicle. Clamp the angle brackets on the end links to the lower control arms with a pair of locking pliers. Mark the hole in the angle bracket on the lower control arm with a permanent marker. Mark the holes in the central sway bar bushings on the frame with the permanent marker then lower the sway bar from the frame.
- 4). Drill 5/8-inch holes in the lower control arms with a drill and metal drill bits. Drill the holes in the frame with a 3/8-inch drill bit and the drill. Mount the sway bar onto the frame with the jack and jack stands.
- 5). Thread a washer and bolt loosely onto one end of both of the U-bolts included in the sway bar kit. Insert each U-bolt up through one of the drilled holes in the frame then maneuver the other end of the U-bolt through the second hole so that the bottom of the U sits on the inside of the frame. Install the washers and bolts on the other side of the U-bolts, verify that the sway bar is centered on the frame with the tape measure then tighten them down to mount the sway bar onto the frame.
- 6). Bolt the angle brackets on the end links to the lower control arms with the provided hardware, the 3/8-inch ratchet and socket and an open-end wrench. Tighten down the end link nut and bolt with the same tools.
