How to Lay Vinyl Tiles on Top of Old Flooring
- 1). Go over the floor with a floor scraper to take up any loose material. Scrub it thoroughly with floor cleanser. Let it dry 24 hours.
- 2). Pour liquid floor leveler over any gaps, holes or cracks in the floor, bringing them level. Let the level set for 12 hours.
- 3). Use a tape measure and chalk snap line to lay two perpendicular lines from the middle of each side of the floor to the middle of the side opposite so there is a plus-sign across the middle of the floor.
- 4). Apply tile adhesive over the middle of the floor with a notched trowel, covering a few square feet over the intersection of the lines. The lines should remain visible through the adhesive.
- 5). Set a floor tile to the floor in one corner of the intersection, pressing it firmly into the adhesive.
- 6). Set additional tiles around the first one, lining them up edge to edge. Spread more adhesive as needed, building out from the middle of the floor to the edges, using the lines to keep it all straight. Install all the full tiles that will fit in the room.
- 7). Allow the adhesive to set for 12 hours. Cut tiles to fit around the perimeter, using a tile cutter and installing them with the cut sides facing the wall.
