How to Replace an Electrical Outlet With a Phone Jack

    • 1). Turn off the outlet that you will be working with via your fuse breaker box, usually located in basements and garages. Flip the switch off that governs the outlet you are using.

    • 2). Unscrew the face plate from the wall. Check the voltage of the outlet with a voltmeter, and make sure that the voltmeter reads zero before working.

    • 3). Remove the outlet from its socket with your screwdriver.

    • 4). Loosen the terminal screws on the outlet, and remove every wire from both screws. Depending on the number of wires (which relates to an outlet's position in a circuit), affix the white wires together, the black wires together, and the grounding wires together with wire nuts. Affix them at the stripped end of the wire with the wire nut, then wrap them in electrical tape.

    • 5). Run phone cable through an outlet to the utility box in the wall, and pull the wire through a hole on the box and pull it into the box.

    • 6). Remove a half-inch of insulation from the green and red wires on the phone cable, and twist the copper around the terminals on your new phone jack. Screw the phone jack into the utility box and put the faceplate back onto the wall.
