- 1). Check to see if your Stratton hat comes with a chin strap. Not all hats come with a chin strap already attached. If yours does not have a chin strap, then purchase one from the Stratton website or another hat store.
- 2). Attach the chin strap to the inside of the hat. Your hat will probably have small loops on the inside of the hat where you can attach the chin strap pieces. If it does not, then you can make some loops from two strips of felt glued to the inside of the hat with super glue. You can also sew the loops to the inside of the hat lining.
- 3). Thread one end of the chin strap with a snap through one of the loops inside the hat. Snap the chin strap into place. Repeat for the other side of the hat. Make sure the buckle on the chin strap is facing the outside of the hat. You will not be able to buckle the strap if the buckle is facing the inside of the hat.
- 4). Place the hat on your head. Place the two ends of the chin strap under your chin. It works best if you attach the chin strap closer to your neck rather than directly on your chin, but some uniforms prefer the chin strap attached right under your chin. Buckle the chin strap against your throat. Make sure to keep a slack jaw as you do this. Try not to pinch your neck as you fasten the strap.
- 5). Move your head back and forth. See if the hat moves, or if the chin strap is tight enough to obstruct movement of your head. If any changes are necessary, tighten or loosen the strap accordingly. Try to talk. If the strap prevents you from talking, then it is on too tight. Jump up and down or shake your head up and down. If your hat falls off, then the strap is too loose. Adjust accordingly.
