How to Make a Strap for a Drum
- 1). Measure the length of strap you need to put on the drum. Stretch the tape measure from the drum to your body in the position the strap needs to be. Write the measurement down as you need to use this several times.
- 2). Cut the nylon strip based on your measurements. Double-check your measurements before cutting to ensure accuracy. Attach the strip clasp to another strip of nylon to extend the its length, if necessary.
- 3). Measure the width of the nylon strip or repurposed strap and then double this number. This gives you the width of the strip. This width is needed as a dimension to cut the fabric pattern used to customize your drum strap.
- 4). Measure and cut your fabric pattern based on the width and length of your nylon strip. Cut enough fabric to cover the length and width of your strip.
- 5). Wrap the nylon strap with the fabric adhesive and cover it with your fabric pattern. Align the fabric with the edges of the strap and ensure the adhesive fits neatly.
- 6). Iron the length of the strap with the temperature set according to the adhesive package's specifications. Allow it to cure, or settle, and become permanent.
- 7). Cut two feet of thread and slip one end of it in the loop of a needle and knot it. Use the needle to stitch along the edge of the nylon strip where the fabric meets. Insert the needle from one side of the strap and then back the other direction, in and out of the fabric-covered nylon along the entire length of the strap. Repeat with more thread as necessary, until the entire length of strap is stitched.
