How to Add Natural Light to a Dark Basement Apartment

    • 1). Prune shade sources near basement windows. Before you worry about the basement interior, make sure you're getting as much light as possible from the get-go. Tall grasses around egresses, unpruned trees and other yard elements limit light.

    • 2). Paint an accent wall to highlight natural light sources. Choose the wall that receives the most daily sunlight, and paint with a bold color that contrasts with the main wall colors. This does not actually create more natural light, but it draws the eye to light sources, making it seem as if the space is flush with sunlight.

    • 3). Apply polyurethane gloss to your basement wall surfaces. Polyurethane gloss is a clear coating that applies just like a regular paint. With this glossy finish, your walls will reflect more natural sunlight for a brighter apartment space.
