How it Works

• PV cells (photovoltaic cells) are used to power the water fountains. These cells are on a panel and respond to the energy provided by the sun. Heat is then turned into motion, causing the solar fountain pump to operate. The panels can be mounted on a wall, or on a stake driven into the ground.
  
  

Features

• There are two options available when selecting solar panels. A fountain can have a separate solar panel, which allows the fountain to remain in one place--for landscaping purposes--while placing the solar panel in a separate place, where it will receive the most sunlight. The other option is a fountain that has the solar panel already built in. In this case, the fountain must be placed where it will regularly receive the most sunlight.
  
  

Types

• Other types of solar-powered water fountains are available. This includes the birdbath solar-powered water fountain, as well as the floating solar-powered fountains. The floating fountains can be floated on a body of water, such as a pool or a pond. The fountains are made in all sizes, shapes and styles. Smaller fountains are often used in home gardens, but the fountains are also available in larger sizes, for commercial use.
  
  

Advantages

• The solar-powered water fountain is the eco-friendly choice because it is not powered by electricity or batteries. The fountains use no fuel and have no emissions. Another advantage is the landscaping option of using the fountains anywhere, as long as there is sunlight reaching the PV cells. Additionally, the fountains are virtually maintenance free.
  
  

Disadvantages

• Unlike the type of solar energy used to power a home--solar energy that is stored for all day use--when the sun goes down, the solar-powered water fountain loses power; it does not store energy and will not work at night. The solar-powered water fountain will only work when it receives sufficient sun.
  
  

Considerations

• Some solar-powered water fountains can also be used indoors, if they come with an optional AC adapter. This is an option to consider in a climate where temperatures reach below freezing and could cause damage to the solar panel. The AC adapter is only approved for indoor use, and should only be plugged into an indoor outlet.
