Art Lighting Directions
- 1). Choose a fixture that will illuminate the art without obscuring the view. A framed painting can be lit with a unit that attaches to the top of the frame and hangs over. A sculpture on a pedestal may need a spotlight mounted on the ceiling. Lights placed on 9-foot ceilings should be attached 24 inches from the wall and angled in toward the art.
- 2). Assess the period and style of the art and frame, in addition to the other furnishing in the room. Ornate, stained frames and traditional paintings or sculptures are better matched to antique gold or bronze lighting fixtures. Modern or abstract art calls for sleek, stainless steel tubular fixtures.
- 3). Light the art three times brighter than the wall behind to make the piece stand out. Protect the art from discoloration or fading by avoiding halogen bulbs of 150 watts or more.
