How to Build an Easy Wood Headboard
- 1). Cut the 2x6 planks to match the width of the bed frame. The planks will attach to the back of the 4x4 posts and the edges of the planks will be flush with the outside corners of the posts, so measure accordingly. For example, measure between the bolt-connection points on the frame (the hole where the frame connects to the headboard) and add a total of 4 inches of overlap.
- 2). Screw the planks to the 4x4 posts using the 2-inch wood screws. Align the edges of the planks to be flush with the outside edge of the posts. Use two screws per plank per post. Align the first board to be 6 inches from the top of the post, and the second board to be 6 inches below the bottom of the first board. These measures may vary, depending on the overall height of your bed.
- 3). Screw the banister knobs to the top of the post. The knobs should have a screw integrated into their base, which should screw into the top of the post. Drill a small hole to guide the screw, if necessary. (If the knob lacks a screw, drill a hole in the post and the knob that is 1 inch deep by 1/2 inch wide and insert a glued wood dowel piece into the knob, then insert the knob with dowel into the hole on the post.)
- 4). Put the completed headboard against the bed frame and align it to the connection bracket on the frame. Mark the spots where the mounting bolts belong. The headboard should be aligned so that the mounting bolts are as close to the midline of each post as possible.
- 5). Insert the heavy 3-inch screws at the marked location. Use two screws per side. The screws should be thick--as much as 1/4 inch wide. Screw them in so that only 1/8 inch of gap remains between the head and the post.
- 6). Verify that the bed frame will properly fit on the headboard mounting screws. If not, adjust screw placement until it does. Then remove the headboard from the frame.
- 7). Paint or stain the headboard to suit the decor of the room. When the paint or stain dries, reattach the headboard to the frame.
