How to Make a Slouch Hat on a Loom

    • 1). Choose a yarn that is somewhat light, such as a fingering weight yarn. Lighter yarns are more likely to slouch, as they are not as stiff.

    • 2). Pick the size of loom you need to fit your head. Newborn looms are yellow, baby looms are red, child looms are green and adult looms are blue. You will find, however, that many yarns stretch, and if you are a smaller adult, a child's-sized loom will work fine for you. Experiment with the different sizes to determine which works best for you.

    • 3). Use your non-dominant thumb to hold the yarn taut under one of the loom's pegs. You can also use a thumb tack to hold the yarn in place under the first peg if your loom is wood. If it is plastic, you can use a piece of duct or painter's tape.

    • 4). Wrap the yarn counterclockwise around the first peg, and then wrap the next peg. Continue wrapping until you have wrapped all of the pegs and are back at the first one.

    • 5). Wrap the pegs again until you are at the first peg.

    • 6). Using a crochet needle or loom to pull the bottom loop over the top loop and toward the middle of the loom. Do this on each peg.

    • 7). Wrap the pegs again. There should always be two wraps on each peg before you knit with your needle or hook. Continue wrapping and pulling until the hat is the desired length.

    • 8). Knit several extra inches to give your hat its slouchy appearance. Measure the length of your head, and add 4 to 6 extra inches to the hat's length.

    • 9). End with one loop on each peg.

    • 10

Cut the yarn, leaving a 15-inch tail. Thread a tapestry needle onto the yarn.

    • 11

Weave the tapestry needle through each loop on each peg. Then, use the hook to pull the loops off the pegs, one by one.

    • 12

Pull the yarn tail until it bunches and closes the hat's hole. Tie a knot, and weave in your loose end with the tapestry needle.
