    • 1). Prep the surface of the logs. Depending on the roughness of your particular bed, this could mean sanding it smooth to get rid of any finishes that will make it hard for paint to adhere.

    • 2). Paint a coat of primer over the logs. Since manufacturer's instructions vary between products. Read the label to ensure proper application procedures and drying times.

    • 3). Paint the log canopy bed in either a white or black, depending on your taste. Use a paint brush to get into all the cracks of the logs and a small roller to smooth out the paint on the front.

    • 4). Cover the log base of the bed with an appropriate sized contemporary bed skirt if you do not want to paint them. This hides the rustic wood completely and gives you a whole different look.

    • 5). Paint the canopy wood in a modern color. Options include white or black to match the bed or a silver-toned paint to mimic chrome.

    • 6). Hang modern-looking curtains from the canopy. Examples include solid colored panels, striped drapes, sheer gauzy material, iridescent metal-flaked curtains or fabric with contemporary geometric patterns.

    • 7). Place complementary modern furnishings around your bed, such as simple white tables on the sides with clean lines or a contemporary black leather chair at the foot. Make a log canopy bed modern by surrounding it with up-to-date furniture pieces that help it to blend in better.

    • 8). Add complementary accessories to the room, such as a log chest or lamps in the same color as the bed or in a contrasting hue. Pair two black log lamps on top of your white nightstands next to your black-painted log canopy bed with black and white striped curtain panels.
