    UVA/UVB Rays

    • UVA rays (ultraviolet A) from sunlight are those the penetrate your skin. They break down the collagen and result in wrinkles. UVB rays (ultraviolet B) are the rays that cause sunburn on the surface of your skin. According to Galt Technology, most sunscreen products focus primarily on blocking these rays.

    SPF

    • SPF is the sun protection factor that blocks some of the harmful rays. It is important to know that even products with very high SPF levels will not entirely block the harmful rays of the sun, according to Galt Technology. For example, SPF 15 blocks 93 percent and SPF 30 blocks 97 percent of the sun's harmful rays. Higher levels do not offer any additional protection.

    Suntan Lotion vs. Sunblock

    • Suntan lotion (sunscreen) offers less protection than sunblock. Sunscreen is typically used when you are attempting to tan without burning. Sunblock is used when you are trying to block the sun's rays as much as possible.

    Sunscreen

    • According to Galt Technology, the best sunscreen should contain Mexoryl. Dermatologist recommend this ingredient as it offers the best protection from wrinkle-causing UVA rays.

    Sunblock

    • Sunblock should contain avobenzone and Mexoryl, two ingredients that are very effective in blocking UVA rays, according to Galt Technology.

    Considerations

    • Some type of sunscreen or sunblock should be used during sunbathing. Reapplication following swimming and activities that result in perspiration is also important.
