Ideas for Making Arts & Crafts with Seniors

    Clay Projects

    • Molding clay is a very good activity for seniors, even those who may not have full use of their hands. Rolling and molding clay into vases, pins, bowls or beads will help seniors exercise their hands while making something creative. Play-Doh is a good alternative to clay--it's available in more colors, and it dries in a few days or can be reused if you don't want to save projects. It is also less messy than regular clay.

    Mosaics

    • A mosaic is like a puzzle, but each piece doesn't have one correct spot--the creator can create her own design. Mosaic projects can be adjusted in scope and complexity based on a senior citizen's eyesight and hand dexterity, and they can be made into picture frames, mirrors, trivets or garden accessories such as flower pots and stepping stones. Be mindful, however, that mosaics can be messy because they involve pouring plaster.

An alternative is to create mosaics out of colorful paper cut-outs, with the canvas as a large white, black or gray piece of paper cut into the desired shape.

    Sewing and Knitting

    • Sewing and knitting projects also can be adapted according to a senior's abilities. Regular sewing and knitting projects work well for those with good eyesight and dexterity. Seniors who don't see as well or have trouble with their hands could try plastic canvas or beading projects, with larger canvas holes and plastic beads as necessary.

    Photography

    • Seniors can bring a camera--either their own or one belonging to the nursing home or living area--to a group outing or event to take photos, or they can take pictures of everyday activities in the home, visits from friends and family, or flowers and other scenery. They can use the prints to create a collage or display their photos in handmade picture frames (such as the mosaic ones suggested above). Scrapbooking is another, more in-depth, project for using photos.
