How to Repair an Unreadable CD
- 1). Apply abrasive, non-gel toothpaste over the scratch. This type of toothpaste is commonly white in color.
- 2). Rub the toothpaste into the scratch with a cotton swab. Use an up-and-down motion, working from the edge of the CD toward the center hole. Continue rubbing until the scratch appears to be removed.
- 3). Place the CD in a bowl of cold water to remove the toothpaste. Remove excess toothpaste with your fingers or a clean cloth rag while the CD is submerged.
- 4). Remove the CD from the water and air dry. Inspect the CD to ensure the scratch is removed.
- 5). Test the CD in your CD player. Repeat the buffing process if the CD remains unreadable.
- 1). Apply metal polish over the scratch. Make sure the entire scratch is covered by the polish. Allow the polish to gloss over.
- 2). Rub the metal polish in a circular motion with a paper towel. Continue the rubbing motion until the scratch has minimized or completely disappears.
- 3). Submerge the CD in cold water to remove excess metal polish.
- 4). Remove the CD and air dry it once all the metal polish has been removed. Test the CD to see if the buffing process needs to be repeated.
