How to Make Felted Handbag on Knifty Knitter
- 1). Wrap the wool yarn around the 40-peg Knifty Knitter Loom and tie off the end at the side peg securely. Use two strands of the same color, cast on wrapping each peg, and keep each line toward the inside of the loom.
- 2). Using the hook, lift the bottom row above the top and continue to wrap the yarn around the loom, repeating each step, while keeping the knitted piece inside the loom. If you are using more than one color of yarn, intersperse these colors by wrapping them around the pegs and lifting the lower row to the one above it. Because you will be felting the handbag, knit it at least twice as large as you want the final size to be, as the felting will shrink. So if you want a 40-row purse, you have to loom 80 rows per panel. This project has two panels and a strap. To create the strap, once you’ve finished the two side panels, wrap the yarn around four to six pegs and knit off until you get the length you want.
- 3). Bind off the panels (and strap) by moving the yarn from peg 1 to peg 2 and lift the bottom loop over the top loop and off the peg to the interior of the loom. Knit peg 3 and move the loop from peg 3 to peg 2. Continue until the yarn is used and all pegs are cleared. Secure it so it will not run.
- 4). Wash the finished panels in the washing machine, set on hot water, for 10 to 15 minutes. You will know that you have achieved proper felting when the knitted stitches meld together or are blurred. Dry the pieces until they are slightly damp.
- 5). Sew the sides and bottom together using the yarn thread and a blanket stitch. Attach the strap. Stuff the purse with the plastic packaging, wrap the sides and let completely dry with the wrap in place to create the shape of the purse. Sew on the Velcro or snaps at the top of the purse to close it.
