How to Install Cabinet Drawer Slides
- 1). Measure the drawer and cabinet carefully. Each set of slides is unique to their manufacturer, so follow their guidelines for specific measurements for your guides. Start with the measurement from the bottom of the opening to the center line of the guide. With European-style nylon slides---80 percent or more of what is being installed today---this measurement is key. Your instructions should give you a specific measurement.
- 2). Install slides on pre-drilled European-style bulkheads by simply choosing the correct set of holes and attaching the slides with screws. For all other cabinets proceed as follows. Mark the side of the cabinet, on the inside right behind the drawer frame. Use a level to mark a line from this point to the rear of the cabinet. This will be your center line for the cabinet piece of the guide.
- 3). Mark the backset. This is the distance from the inside of the cabinet frame to the front edge of the drawer slide and should be included with your instructions.
- 4). Place the cabinet piece of the slide on the center line, front edge at backset mark. Hold it steady, mark all slotted screw holes with a pencil and pre-drill. These are typically only the front and back holes and are designed to allow adjustment. Repeat procedure for the other side of the cabinet.
- 1). Use the adjustment screw holes to temporarily install your slides. Snug the screws with a screwdriver to avoid stripping.
- 2). Place the drawer slide on the drawer according to the manufacturer's instructions. Mark and pre-drill the holes. Be careful, as the drawer sides are thin. Attach slides to the drawer and place the drawer in the cabinet.
- 3). Test for proper function, adjust the cabinet piece if necessary and add the remaining screws.
If you have several drawers to do at the same height and backset, cut a plywood piece the right height and width to hold the slide in the proper position and brace it against the inside of the cabinet side as a jig to place the remaining slides.
