How to Install a New Car CD Player

• 1). The first step to installing a car CD player is buying the correct head unit. To find a proper head unit, head over to a website like Crutchfield.com and put in the information about your car. The website will give you a list of compatible CD players. You can purchase online or head to a store; either is fine.
  
  
• 2). Once you've purchased a new CD player for your car, you'll need to remove the old one. Disconnect the negative charge cable from the battery first to make sure no electricity is running through the car.
  
  Once you have done that, you can start removing the trim around the stereo. Look around carefully and remove all screws and clips that are holding the trim in place. There are usually four to six screws and clips, depending on the car. Once you have removed all screws, the trim will pop off with almost no force.
  
  
• 3). Remove the screws holding the stereo in place, and carefully pull the stereo out. Do not pull hard; the stereo is still connected to the wiring harness. Carefully remove the wires attached to the stereo and pull it free.
  
  
• 4). Take your new stereo and new wiring harness and connect the correct wire to the correct spots. Everything will be color-coded, so it is easy to do. Place the wire in the correct slot, and crimp it down for a tight fit with your wire crimper. Once all the wires are connected to the harness, connect them to the back of the new stereo in the correct order. Pay attention to the color coding.
  
  
• 5). Slide the stereo into place, and screw the stereo into place. Reconnect the battery, and test the stereo to make sure everything is connected right before you start placing the trim back in place.
  
  If everything checks out OK you can replace the trim just as you removed it.
  
  
• 6). Screw the trim back in place, and your new stereo should fit perfectly. If you have purchased a stereo that is smaller than the factory stereo you will want to purchase a "trim kit" for a snug fit. Trim Kits are available at most auto stores and car audio websites.
