Ideas for Backsplashes

    Border Backsplash

    • A border backsplash consists of two tiles sizes: one smaller and one much larger, up to twice the size of the smaller tiles. Tile layout depends on your preference. Often, the smaller tiles are used to create a border in the middle of the backsplash. The designer lays the larger tiles on top and below the border. You can also switch the design, using larger tiles as the border and smaller tiles above and below. A more classic approach uses one type of tile as a border on the top and bottom of the backsplash. Larger tiles circle the top of the backsplash and the bottom, where the backsplash meets the counters or appliances.

    Diagonal Tiles

    • Create an elegant backsplash from smaller tiles of 1 to 2 inches arranged diagonally. The backsplash looks modern or more traditional, depending on the colors used. Lighter and more neutral colors, including tan and cream, have a more traditional look, while brighter shades of green and blue look more modern. Mix the primary color with a few decorated tiles, which serve as accent pieces. Add just a few decorative tiles to accent the plain tiles and keep the backsplash from looking too boring.

    Curved Backsplash

    • A curved backsplash creates a dramatic impression in any kitchen. Arrange the tiles on a diagonal or in a straight line fashion, working your way to the top of the backsplash. When you reach the top, cut the tiles and lay on the wall at an angle, making it look as if the top of the backsplash curves. Paint the wall around the backsplash a neutral color that won't detract from the tiles.

    Mural Backsplash

    • Consider using a mural backsplash in your kitchen. The tiles are laid flat and a design painted on the top. When you attach the tiles to the wall, the picture appears. It's a little tricky to install because you must follow the pattern on the directions. If you can't find mural backsplashes, make your own by painting a design on tiles of your own choosing. Opt for a design that fits your kitchen such as a country farm design or a painted mural of a vineyard.
