What to Wear to a Modeling Open Call
- First, pay close attention to any recommendations that the modeling agency may give as to the proper apparel. If it is not specified, you can never go wrong by wearing a nice black dress, or slacks and a top that fits you well but is not too tight, along with medium-height heels. It is important that you are comfortable walking in the shoes that you wear to the interview. Modeling scouts will often want to see how you walk.
- Most modeling scouts are looking for a natural look. They are more interested in the bone structure of your face and the natural beauty of your features than in seeing someone who is skilled in applying a lot of makeup. The model is not expected to have tremendous skill in makeup application. It is the job of professional makeup artists to create the desired look.
- If possible, bring a portfolio of images with you. Ten to 12 good photos will probably be sufficient. Most modeling agencies are looking for versatility, so choose a variety of poses for your portfolio, which will accentuate your versatility as a model. Intermingle images in which you are smiling with more serious looks.
- Not everyone has the specific "look" that a certain modeling scout or agent may be searching for. It is a tough industry. Even the most popular supermodels have experienced numerous rejections. Use any feedback that you receive from modeling scouts as constructive criticism, or as a guide to help you to realize where your strong points lie. Modeling covers a plethora of areas. A very tall, lean person will probably be more suitable for runway modeling than a shorter person. A more muscular person will have an advantage in fitness modeling, where height is not important, than a person who does not have exceptional muscle tone. Choose clothing that will accentuate your strong points.
- The majority of modeling work is for department store advertising or the like. Clothing catalog companies and department stores are seeking a more average look, rather than a unique or exotic appearance. In these cases, it's best to wear neat but casual clothes.
Agencies that hire their models for advertising want to appeal to a cross-section of society. It is likely to be less lucrative, but it is achievable for the persistent model who seeks to make a decent living.
