How to Install a Radio in a 1990 Geo Prizm

    • 1). Remove the two small access panels on either side of the steering wheel with a flat-head screwdriver or trim panel removal tool. Remove the two screw bolts beneath the panels with a 10mm socket and drive.

    • 2). Pry the vent to the left of the steering column away from the dash with a flat-head screwdriver. Remove the screw bolt behind the vent with the socket and drive.

    • 3). Remove the two bolts on the bottom of the lower dash panel below the steering column.

    • 4). Remove the two screws to the immediate left and right of the steering column with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 5). Grab the dash panel and pull it away from the dashboard with slight force.

    • 6). Pry the defrost switch panel from the dashboard with a flat-head screwdriver or trim panel removal tool. The panel is located on the right side of the steering wheel. Disconnect wiring connections for the switches and set the control panel aside.

    • 7). Remove the six screws on the panel under the steering column with a Phillips screwdriver. Lift the paneling around the steering wheel away from the steering column.

    • 8). Remove the two screws on each side of the stereo with an 8mm socket and drive.

    • 9). Slide the stereo from the Geo's stereo dock and disconnect the stereo wiring and antenna cable from the back of the unit.

      Slide the aftermarket installation collar into the empty stereo dock. Fold the tabs of the collar outward with a flat-head screwdriver to secure it into the dock. Pull the stereo wiring and antenna cable from the back of the dock to the front of the collar.

      Plug the Prizm's stereo wiring connectors into the wiring harness adapter lead connectors. Plug the lead connectors into the corresponding outlets on the rear panel of the new radio.

      Plug the antenna cable into a GM antenna adapter. Plug the adapter lead into the FM antenna outlet on the back of the new radio.

      Slide the radio into the installation collar until it snaps into place within the dock.

      Replace the dash panel over the steering column and replace the screws.

      Place the steering column panel into place and screw in the six screws with a Phillips screwdriver.

      Connect the defrost control switches to the electrical wiring from the Geo's dash. Snap the panel into place on the dashboard.

      Raise the lower dash panel to meet the underside of the dashboard and replace the 10mm screw bolts.

      Replace the three screw bolts on the dash panel to the left and right of the steering column with the socket and drive. Place the vent to the left of the steering wheel in place and press firmly against it to snap it onto the dash panel.

      Replace the two small access panels on either side of the steering wheel, pressing each of them until they snap onto the dash. Return to the Geo's battery.

      Replace the negative battery cable clamp over the negative battery lead post. Tighten the cable's clamp to the post with a 10mm wrench. Close the hood.
